Discover Bot
In collaboration with J Gabe Rustia Fall 2017
Throughout human history, people have had a desire to push boundaries and limits to discover new experiences. Inspired by Google Trek and Starlink, where people take data capturing off the grid. We would like to provide a service allowing us to have a visceral and authentic experience of the world.
The desired to travel is in our nature and there should be no limitations
How can we travel if there are... Physical constraints, lack of money, lack of time
What if
there is a device that can travel for you and capture surroundings in live stream?
What if
we were able to experience extreme environments without suffering the consequences of survival?
Research / Ideation
Identified needs for this project:
Remote accessibility / Remote Location / Satellite communication
360° Camera / Hovering / Weather resistant / Submerge-able
Final Solution:
Utilize the mesh network system / Develop device that can travel remote locations via home virtual reality device
THE BALLOON
A Travel Balloon Hub
The Hub system floats above like a balloon and carries multiples of the vessel ready to deploy. Hub Delivers the Mesh network communication, battery recharge for the vessel and cleaning system from inside which then let the vessel deploy with refresh condition.
NETWORK
We looked at the potential of how live-stream travel could communicate using the Ballon Hub device.
THE VESSEL
Versatile drone system allows user to travel world without any constrains. Designed to withstand tough environments, while swivel wing system lets the drone operate on land, air , even water.
Mode 1: POST UP
Being able to pinpoint a location enhances our ability to observe an area without any movement. We envisioned this to be a lens into another part of our world, allowing people to visit remote places.
Inspired by tripods, the cameras upright stance puts the users in a familiar perspective. It is as if they were "posted up", sitting right there. This allows for a more calming and stationary point-of-view.
Mode 2: STABLE FLIGHT
Experience elevation, side to side movements or hover in place. The quad-rotor mechanism combined with an internal electric ducted fan (EDF), allows for stable and versatile lift capabilities.
Combine these physical features with our artificial intelligent tour guide; you will be able to explore without feeling sick or out of control.
Mode 3: HERITAGE INSPIRED
While playing with our prototypes... We found our design allowed the concept to turn into a traditional propeller airplane from the past.
The concept when combined with momentum, can be useful in both underwater and air scenarios to conserve energy. This mode allows for a more efficient linear path, rather than side to side movement
Details
Concealed antenna
Air intake
Carbon fiber shell
Anti-fog lens
MOCK-UP
Building prototypes were the primary source of how we iterated and refined our design. All of our decisions were made by testing how electronic components, with the physical mechanics, can influence the overall form. We had a ton of fun here and eventually led us to the final design.
